- TECHNICAL DATA SHEEt: Key characteristics and APPLICATIONS

Polyamide 66 (PA66) [Nylon66]

General Information:

  • Product Name: Polyamide 66 (PA66) or Nylon 66
  • Classification: Semi-crystalline thermoplastic

Typical Properties:

  • Density: 1.14 – 1.15 g/cm³
  • Melt Flow Rate (MFR): Varies with grade and additives
  • Tensile Strength: 60 – 85 MPa
  • Elongation at Break: 40 – 250%
  • Tensile Modulus: 2,200 – 3,100 MPa
  • Melting Point: 255 – 265°C
  • Glass Transition Temperature: 50 – 55°C
  • Notched Izod Impact Strength: 55 – 100 J/m
  • Moisture Absorption: Up to 2.5% (hygroscopic)
  • Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion: 70 – 110 x 10^(-6) K^(-1)

 Features and Benefits:

  • High Mechanical Strength: Strong and durable material, often more rigid than PA6.
  • Wear Resistance: Exhibits good resistance against wear and abrasion.
  • Good Chemical Resistance: Resistant against many oils, greases, aliphatic hydrocarbons. Sensitive to strong acids, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and UV radiation.
  • Temperature Performance: Can withstand high temperatures, offering better heat aging properties than PA6.
  • Hygroscopic: Absorbs moisture, which can affect mechanical properties.

Applications:

  • Automotive: Under-the-hood components, radiator grills, headlamp covers.
  • Electrical & Electronics: Connectors, housings, switches.
  • Consumer Goods: Zippers, sporting goods, tool handles.
  • Industrial: Bearings, gears, fasteners.
  • Textiles: Used to produce nylon fibres for clothing and carpets.

Processing Methods:

  • Extrusion (for fibres, films, and profiles)
  • Injection Molding (for producing various components)
  • Rotational Moulding

Environmental Impact and Recycling:

  • PA66 can be recycled, though not as commonly as PET or PP. Recycling process includes depolymerization.
  • Keep dry before recycling due to its hygroscopic nature.
  • When incinerated, it releases water, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen without halogens, sulfur, or heavy metals.

Storage and Handling:

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to avoid moisture absorption.
  • Should be pre-dried before processing due to hygroscopic properties.
  • Handle with care to avoid damage.

Safety Information:

  • Generally safe for various consumer and industrial applications.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation when processing or welding PA66 to avoid inhalation of fumes.
  • Though not highly flammable, PA66 will burn and melt under direct flames.

Note: This technical data sheet provides general information and typical values for PA66. Actual specifications can differ based on manufacturer and specific product grade. Always refer to manufacturer-specific data sheets for detailed information on a particular product.
