TECHNICAL DATA SHEET: KEY CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATIONS

Polyamide 6 (PA6) [Nylon6]

General Information:

  • Product Name: Polyamide 6 (PA6) or Nylon 6
  • Classification: Semi-crystalline thermoplastic

Typical Properties:

  • Density: 1.08 – 1.14 g/cm³
  • Melt Flow Rate (MFR): Varies with grade and additives
  • Tensile Strength: 50 – 80 MPa
  • Elongation at Break: 50 – 300%
  • Tensile Modulus: 2,000 – 3,000 MPa
  • Melting Point: 215 – 225°C
  • Glass Transition Temperature: 47 – 50°C
  • Notched Izod Impact Strength: 60 – 120 J/m
  • Moisture Absorption: Up to 2.7% (considered hygroscopic)
  • Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion: 80 – 120 x 10^(-6) K^(-1)

Features and Benefits:

  • High Mechanical Strength: Strong and durable material suitable for various applications.
  • Wear Resistance: Excellent resistance to wear and abrasion.
  • Good Chemical Resistance: Resistant to many chemicals and hydrocarbons, though sensitive to strong acids and oxidising agents.
  • High Flexibility: Despite its strength, PA6 is flexible and can be used in applications that require some degree of flexibility.
  • Hygroscopic: Can absorb moisture which can affect its mechanical properties.

Applications:

  • Automotive: Under-the-hood components, gears, bearings.
  • Consumer Goods: Sports equipment, combs, toothbrush bristles.
  • Electrical Components: Cable ties, connectors, housing.
  • Textiles: Used to produce nylon fibres for clothing.
  • Industrial: Gears, rollers, and machine parts.

Processing Methods:

  • Extrusion (monofilaments, sheets, and rods)
  • Injection Molding (parts and components)
  • Casting
  • Rotational Moulding

Environmental Impact and Recycling:

  • PA6 is recyclable, though its recycling process is not as common as PET or PP.
  • Should be kept dry before recycling because of its moisture absorption properties.
  • When incinerated, PA6 releases water, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. It does not produce halogens, sulphur, or heavy metals during combustion.

Storage and Handling:

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to prevent moisture absorption.
  • PA6 should be dried before processing due to its hygroscopic nature.
  • Handle with care to prevent mechanical damage.

Safety Information:

  • Generally safe for various consumer and industrial applications.
  • When processing or welding PA6, ensure adequate ventilation to prevent the inhalation of fumes.
  • Although not extremely flammable, PA6 will burn and melt when exposed to open flames.

Note: This technical data sheet provides general information and typical values for PA6. The actual specifications might differ based on the manufacturer and specific product grade. Always refer to manufacturer-specific data sheets for detailed information on a particular product.
