- TECHNICAL DATA SHEEt: Key characteristics and APPLICATIONS

Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) [Acrylic]

General Information:

  • Product Name: Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) or Acrylic
  • Classification: Amorphous thermoplastic

Typical Properties:

  • Density: 1.17 – 1.20 g/cm³
  • Tensile Strength: 65 – 75 MPa
  • Elongation at Break: 1.5 – 5%
  • Tensile Modulus: 2,500 – 3,200 MPa
  • Vicat Softening Point: 85 – 105°C
  • Notched Izod Impact Strength: 0.2 – 0.6 kJ/m²
  • Refractive Index: 1.490 – 1.492
  • Light Transmission: 92% (clear grades)
  • Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion: 70 – 100 x 10^(-6) K^(-1)
  • Dielectric Constant: 2.5 – 4.0 (at 1 MHz)

Features and Benefits:

  • Optical Clarity: Exceptional light transmittance and clarity.
  • UV Resistance: PMMA is inherently UV resistant and doesn’t yellow easily.
  • Weatherability: Resistant to weathering and UV radiation.
  • Thermal Stability: Retains properties over a broad temperature range.
  • Easily Fabricated: Can be machined, polished, or bonded with ease.
  • Chemical Resistance: Resistant to many common household chemicals, but organic solvents can attack PMMA.

Applications:

  • Optics: Lenses, prisms, and optical fibres.
  • Building & Construction: Skylights, windows, and illuminated signage.
  • Automotive: Tail lights, indicators, and reflectors.
  • Consumer Goods: Displays, eyeglass lenses, and decorative items.
  • Medical: Dental and orthopaedic applications.
  • General Purpose: Aquarium tanks, protective barriers, and artistic installations.

Processing Methods:

  • Extrusion (sheets, rods, tubes)
  • Injection Molding (optical and precision components)
  • Casting (bulk and special forms)

Environmental Impact and Recycling:

  • PMMA can be recycled, although recycling facilities specifically for PMMA are not as widespread.
  • When incinerated, PMMA produces carbon dioxide and water vapor without the release of toxic gases.
  • Many industries reuse PMMA scrap in-house, converting it back into a polymer and making new products.

Storage and Handling:

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and chemicals.
  • Handle with care to avoid scratching or marring the surface.

Safety Information:

  • PMMA is safe for various consumer and industrial applications.
  • When processing PMMA, ensure proper ventilation to prevent inhalation of vapors.
  • PMMA is flammable and should be kept away from open flames and high temperatures. When burned, it releases clean-burning products: CO₂ and H₂O.

Note: This technical data sheet provides general information and typical values for PMMA. Actual specifications might differ based on the manufacturer and specific product grade. Always refer to manufacturer-specific data sheets for detailed information on a particular product.
